'Red wine hot chocolate' is the boozy winter drink that's taking over the internet

Move over, mulled wine. There’s a new winter drink in town.

IT’S THE FIRST day of winter and you know what that means – loads of settling in with cosy drinks like hot whiskeys and mulled wine.

And now there’s a new warming drink doing the rounds that we rather like the sound of.

Introducing Red Wine Hot Chocolate.

It’s precisely what it sounds like. Basically you make hot chocolate as normal, only at the end, you add a few sneaky drops of red wine.

Et voilà!

The recipe has been doing the rounds on food blogs and Pinterest for years.

According to the New York Times, the food blog Imma Eat That is widely credited with originating the recipe.

But it went mainstream over the weekend, thanks to this New York Times article.

And now loads of people are trying it out.

And the #redwinehotchocolate hashtag on Instagram is really coming to life.

Apparently the key to making it really delicious is using actual chocolate.

Per The New York Times:

The key is to start with a good hot chocolate, said Jacques Torres, a New York pastry chef whose public identity is so fused with chocolate that he is known as “Mr. Chocolate. “You’re going to use real chocolate,” he said, not cocoa powder, and warm it with milk and a bit of condensed milk for extra silkiness.

So no lobbing in half a bottle of wine into this stuff, you hear?
